Hello! I’m a media historian and qualitative social scientist working at the cultural intersections of computation and behavioral science. I’m currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Dartmouth College.
I completed my doctorate in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University under the supervision of Helen Nissenbaum in the spring of 2016. My dissertation project, That Signal Feeling: Emotion and Interaction Design from Social Media to the “Anxious Seat,” explores the history of how psychological tools and techniques have been built into the interaction design of the digital digital device we use on a daily basis.
More broadly, I’m interested in the changing nature of human subjectivity in the digital age. I’ve done work on emotion and online privacy; Uber and the on-demand economy; and the cultural and political evolution of emoticons and emoji. I’m currently in the preliminary stages of developing my second major project, a history of what I call “visceral data.”
I’m a proud native of Toronto, Canada, and hold an Honours BA in History & English and an MA in History, both from the University of Toronto. I’ve been generously funded at various points in my academic life by the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the National Science Foundation, the Government of Ontario, and New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and its Provost’s Global Research Initiatives. In 2015-2016, I was a Doctoral Student Research Fellow with the NYU Center for the Humanities, a Student Fellow of the NYU School of Law’s Information Law Institute (ILI), and an inaugural Fellow with the University of California Berkeley’s Center for Technology, Society, and Policy.
My academic pursuits have been complimented by past work in Issues Management and Strategic Communications Planning for the Ontario Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care and Natural Resources; other highlights from my admittedly eclectic résumé include sleep-away camp counselor, forest ranger, and ranch hand. I also sit on the board of advisors for the Reach for the Top Foundation.
